Children's Dentistry

At Arrowhead Children's Dentistry and Orthodontics, we see children of all ages—from infants to teens and all ages in between. Our team is here for your child's oral health journey, from the arrival of the first baby tooth to the first wisdom tooth and every stage in between.

Pediatric Dentistry from Infants to Teens

We agree with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's recommendation that children have their first dental checkup six months after getting their first baby tooth but no later than age one.

Your child's oral health is a precious thing. Steps taken when they are young can significantly impact their future oral health and set the stage for a lifelong healthy smile.

  • Dental exams and teeth cleanings
  • Sealants and fluoride
  • Tooth fillings and baby crowns
  • Tooth extraction, including wisdom teeth
  • Baby root canals
  • Traditional braces
  • Sedation dentistry
  • Sports mouthguards

Why Baby Teeth Are Important

Children eventually lose baby teeth, but we need to keep them healthy until they're ready to come out naturally. Baby teeth have several important jobs to do:

  • Help your child learn to chew
  • Allow your child to speak clearly
  • Hold space for permanent teeth
  • Guide permanent teeth into the proper position

Our dentists can watch for cavities and other issues and treat them promptly with exams and teeth cleanings at our Glendale, AZ, dental office every six months.

Your Child's First Dental Visit

We create a safe, fun, and stress-free environment to help kids develop a positive association with dental visits. Our kindhearted team is very patient and gentle and understands that each child is unique.

At your child's first visit, we'll count their teeth, give them a ride in the dental chair, and let them hold the little mirror. As your child's confidence grows, we'll include cleanings and exams at their appointments.

We also encourage you to use your child's appointments to ask questions about brushing and flossing, diet, habits like bottle-feeding and thumb-sucking, or anything else that's on your mind.

Dentistry as Your Child Grows

Around age three, children usually have all their baby teeth. Between ages six and 12, baby teeth start to come out and are replaced by permanent or adult teeth.

Our dentists will be here for your child to provide whatever services they need to maintain healthy teeth and gums during these years.

Dental Sealants & Fluoride

Many children benefit from dental sealants that protect teeth with a thin plastic coating and seal out bacteria and food particles. Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps protect them against decay.

Tooth Fillings and Baby Dental Crowns

If a baby tooth has a cavity, we need to repair it with a filling to protect it until the permanent tooth comes in. Fillings work well for small cavities, but a larger cavity may require a baby dental crown to protect it.

Baby crowns are very durable and affordable and stay in place until the permanent tooth is ready to emerge. Since a crown covers the entire tooth, it protects it from further decay and strengthens it, so it functions properly.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions in Glendale, AZ

Wisdom teeth are also called third molars and are the last teeth to appear in our late teens and early 20s. Because these teeth are so far back in the mouth, they can be impossible to clean properly, and they also cause crowding of existing teeth.

Our dentists commonly recommend removing them for these reasons and perform wisdom teeth extraction—including impacted wisdom teeth—here at our comfortable Glendale, AZ, dental office.

Orthodontic Evaluation at Age Seven

We recommend all children have an orthodontic evaluation with Dr. Jesse at the age of seven. The purpose is to determine what steps we can take now to minimize or even eliminate the need for braces in the future.

Safe Sedation Dentistry for Kids

Our priority is a comfortable experience for your child, so they keep a positive attitude about dental care. If your child needs a filling, root canal, crown, or extraction, we recommend nitrous oxide or "laughing gas." Nitrous is a safe and effective way to prevent dental anxiety and allow kids to have a calm, relaxed experience.

Schedule Your Child's Next Dental Exam

Please call Arrowhead Children's Dentistry and Orthodontics, and a cheerful team member will be happy to help you. We are children's dentists who are pleased to serve Glendale, Peoria, Phoenix, and surrounding communities.

Very Kind Employees

Very very kind employees. While I was getting my teeth cleaned I even got to listen to Dr. Blane (not sure how his name is spelt) sing times like these by the foo fighters whilst he was also playing the guitar;)

Frequently Asked Questions

At Arrowhead Children's Dentistry and Orthodontics, our job is to make sure that children's baby teeth stay healthy and strong until they're ready to come out naturally. If your child has severe decay or suffers damage or trauma to a baby tooth, we need to take quick action to save it.

Bacteria that enter the inside of the tooth called pulp, it can cause an infection. Pulp contains nerves that provide feeling to the tooth, so when it becomes infected or inflamed, your child will experience a toothache.

What Is a Baby Root Canal?

Once infection reaches the pulp, there's no way we can just clean it out. Pulp treatment (also called a pulpotomy) is a procedure where we remove the pulp, sterilize the space, and fill it with dental material. This procedure is often referred to as a "baby root canal," but it's really not a root canal because we only remove the pulp in the crown of the tooth, not the whole root.

After we complete the procedure, we recommend that a baby crown be placed on the tooth to protect it from further damage. In a couple days the tooth will act and function just like a normal tooth.

Gentle Sedation Dentistry for Your Child

A baby root canal isn't painful, but we are pleased to offer nitrous oxide or laughing gas if you think your child could benefit from some extra relaxation. Nitrous oxide helps young children remain calm and comfortable during their procedure but has no long-term lingering side effects.

If your child has a persistent toothache, pulp treatment may be the best solution. Please call us to schedule an appointment so we can provide relief and protect their smile.

We agree with the recommendation of the American Dental Association and like to see children within six months of getting their first baby tooth but no later than their first birthday. It’s important for us to monitor their oral development, but it’s also a good idea to help toddlers get accustomed to the dental office environment.

A Stress-Free First Dental Visit

During the first visit, we like to keep things low-key so that the child’s first experience is positive and fun. Our children’s dental office is a calm, relaxed environment, and we allow parents back for the first visit and most procedures.

It’s important to us that children feel secure and understand they are in a safe place with friendly, caring people. Small steps like giving a child a ride in the dental chair and counting their teeth allow them to get used to us and the new environment.

Starting slowly and showing them that dental visits aren’t scary builds their confidence and can even help children become great dental patients as adults.

Children's Dentistry Technology

Mess-Free Digital Impressions

Taking dental impressions with paste is a messy, uncomfortable process, especially for children. Our goal is to make every aspect of your child's experience comfortable and easy, so we offer leading-edge digital dental impressions.

Instead of goopy paste, we pass our handheld intraoral scanner over your child's teeth, and it captures a highly detailed and accurate digital impression. Our dentists use specialized computer software that creates a 3-D virtual model of your child's mouth to help them create precise tooth restorations like dental crowns and plan orthodontic treatment.

Digital X-Rays

Digital dental x-rays are an essential part of providing high-quality children's dentistry. A dental x-ray gives our specialists the details they need to diagnose problems like cavities and infections and closely monitor your child's ever-changing dental needs.

Our low-dose digital x-rays expose children to a fraction of the radiation of traditional film x-rays and produce much higher-quality images. These x-rays are also more comfortable because we use flat digital sensors with rounded edges that slip easily inside a child's mouth to capture the images.

When our dentists review x-rays with you, you can see the problem in great detail and understand how treatment will benefit your child. Using digital x-rays, we can identify the tiniest of cavities and treat them promptly before they cause any long-term dental damage. We save your child's x-rays to our digital patient records, making them easy for our team members to access as needed.
